Role Reversal: Pioneers top Blugolds

Posted February 6, 2010

UW-Platteville, defeated at home by UW-Eau Claire by 32 points in January, reversed roles and beat the Blugolds 57-51 Saturday for their first win in Zorn Arena since December, 1988.

Ashley Wolf scored a career-high 18 points, including three free throws in the 27 seconds to seal the victory. The Blugolds' Jess Freagon made a three-point shot, bringing UWEC within 53-51 with 32 seconds left, but Wolf nailed one of two with 27 seconds left and two more 11 seconds later. Liz Lawinger hit one of two free shots with two seconds left to complete the turnaround win.

Charity Stotmeister and Stacia Nemitz added 10 points apiece for the Pioneers, who improved to 12-9 overall and 5-7 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.

The Pioneers, who lost 70-38 to the Blugolds on Jan. 6, used a 12-0 spurt early in the second half to take the lead. Coach Tina Kuhle's club trailed 31-28 at the half and 35-31 early in the second period before going on the run. Claire Poad's three-pointer brought the Pioneers within 35-34, and Kaitlyn Pustina's three-ball gave them the lead for good at 37-35.

The Pioneers made 21-27 free throws after repeatedly attacking the taller Blugold team, and the home team made just 3-3 from the line.

Hannah Messick led the Blugolds (7-14, 6-6) with 11 points, while Laura Olson and Sarah Bingea had 10 apiece.
