Posted December 30, 2009

UW-Platteville scored 20 straight first-half points and cruised to a 63-49 victory over Augsburg (Minn.) Wednesday in the consolation game of the Wartburg AmericInn Holiday Classic in Waverly, Iowa.

Trailing 11-8, the Pioneers went on the 20-0 run, holding the Auggies scoreless for 10:26. UWP led 28-19 at the halftime break.

Augsburg cut the lead to as small as three at 46-43, but Liz Lawinger made one of two free throws, Ashley Mulholland made two, and Charity Stotmeister converted an inside shot, extending the Pioneer lead back to 51-43.

Stotmeister scored a game-high 21 points--just two shy of her career best--to pace the Pioneers. Ashley Wolf did hit her career high with 14 points, while Claire Poad added 13, and Lawinger 11. The Pioneers made 40.4 percent from the field to Augsburg's 35.7 and held off the Auggies by making 12-16 free throws in the second half.

Coach Tina Kuhle's pressure defense forced 31 Augsburg turnovers, helping the Pioneers improve to 9-3 in the first semester. Lawinger made five steals, and Poad and Stotmeister each had four.

Serenae Levine led Augsburg (1-6) with 13 points and 10 rebounds.

The Pioneers play their first home game in more than a month on Wednesday, Jan. 6, when they face UW-Eau Claire at 5 p.m. in a women's and men's doubleheader. One ticket is good for both contests.
