Pioneers lose to taller Pointers

UW-Stevens Point used its superior height advantage to beat UW-Platteville 72-44 Wednesday night in Williams Fieldhouse.

The Pointers outscored the Pioneers 46-12 in the paint and held a commanding 43-19 advantage on the boards.

UWSP grabbed 16 of the game's first 19 rebounds and raced to a 22-10 lead. The Pioneers cut the deficit to 26-20 on Jessica Brandau's three-point basket, but the Pointers ran off the final 11 points of the first half. After scoring the first six points of the second half for a 43-20 advantage, the Pointers cruised the rest of the way.

Nathalie Lechault, a 6-2 center, made all five shots from the field and finished with 13 points, five rebounds and six blocked shots. Cassandra Schultz and Laura Neuenfeldt each added 12 for UWSP (12-5, 5-3).

Liz Tesch scored 12 points, and Brandau finished with 10 for UWP (8-8, 4-4).

The Pioneers return to Williams Fieldhouse Saturday to face UW-Stout at 1 p.m. in the first game of a doubleheader with the men. One ticket is good for both games.
