Pioneers hold off Eagles

UW-Platteville held off UW-La Crosse 62-59 to earn a hard-fought Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference victory Wednesday in Williams Fieldhouse.

The Pioneers never trailed but never led by more than eight points during any time of the game. The Eagles closed within 55-52 on Leslie Mattson's inside shot, but Lisa Wubben and Holly Kaiser scored back-to-back baskets for the Pioneers for a seven-point advantage.

UWL closed to within two for the final time on Lindsay Wahl's layup with 32 seconds left. UWP's Shannon Boatman was fouled with 9.4 seconds remaining and made 1-2 free throws for a 62-59 lead. UWL's Shawna Koss's three-point attempt rimmed out with two seconds left.

The Pioneers improved to 10-4 overall and 3-3 in the WIAC, while the Eagles fell to 9-6, 2-4.

Kaiser led the Pioneers with 18 points, while Wubben added 14. Matson's 17 topped the Eagles.

UWP, playing just its second home WIAC game of the year, is at home for the next five contests. The Pioneers play host to UW-River Falls Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
