Pioneers Drop Contest To UW-Eau Claire Wednesday
PLATTEVILLE, Wis. – The University of Wisconsin-Platteville women’s basketball team (8-8, 1-4 WIAC) kept pace with No. 14 UW-Eau Claire (13-3, 4-1 WIAC) for much of the game, but ultimately fell 75-59 on Wednesday night on Bo Ryan Court.
PLATTEVILLE, Wis. – The University of Wisconsin-Platteville women's basketball team (8-8, 1-4 WIAC) kept pace with No. 14 UW-Eau Claire (13-3, 4-1 WIAC) for much of the game, but ultimately fell 75-59 on Wednesday night on Bo Ryan Court.
Both offenses found success in a quick tempo first quarter, and the Blugolds held a 21-17 lead heading into the second. The Pioneers were able to answer UW-Eau Claire several times throughout the first 10 minutes, as threes by freshman Madalyn Reichmann, freshman Macey Banasik, and sophomore Brynlee Nelson kept the score close. The Blugolds scored the first seven points of the second to increase the lead to double digits for the first time in the game, but four straight points by junior Sarah Mueller along with a three by senior Allison Heckert cut the deficit down to six. UW-Eau Claire slowly increased the lead back to 10 by the end of the half and the visitors took a 39-29 lead into the break.
The Pioneers got as close as seven in the third quarter, but the Blugolds still led 55-44 heading into the final frame. Junior Addison Baierl put together a strong quarter, scoring seven points off the bench on 3-of-3 shooting while also grabbing three rebounds to lead the team. UW-Eau Claire outscored the Pioneers by five in the fourth to win 75-59.
Nelson paced the Pioneers with 11 points while Mueller finished with 10 points. Banasik and Baierl tied for the team lead with six rebounds, while freshmen Blair Watters and Ella Mackiewicz each recorded three steals. UW-Platteville shot 36.8 percent (21-of-57) for the game and 30.4 percent (7-of-23) from deep.
Courtney Crouch and Tyra Boettcher each scored 21 points to lead the Blugolds attack. Evelyn Walker pitched in with a double-double off the bench, tallying 10 points and 10 boards. UW-Eau Claire put together a strong shooting performance, finishing 43.3 percent (29-of-67) and 53.3 percent (8-of-15) from three.
The Pioneers will head to UW-River Falls on Saturday, January 14 with tip-off set for 3 p.m.
