PLATTEVILLE, Wis. – The University of Wisconsin-Platteville women's basketball team opens its 2022-23 campaign at home against Ripon on Tuesday night at 7 p.m. The team will look to improve upon its 10-15 record from a year ago.
The Pioneers return two starters from last season in fifth-year senior Allison Heckert and sophomore Brynlee Nelson. Heckert started all 25 games and was second on the team averaging 29.2 minutes per game, while Nelson started 17 games as freshman at 21.0 minutes. The backcourt duo tied for fourth on team in scoring, averaging 6.3 points per game. Heckert also averaged a team-high 1.3 steals per game and was second in assists (2.0) and fourth in rebounds (2.8).
Junior Sarah Mueller will likely step into the starting lineup after contributing as the top bench option a year ago, averaging 20.6 minutes across 25 games. The forward was second on the team in scoring, averaging 8.9 points per game on a 45.5 shooting percentage. Mueller was strong on the glass, collecting 4.2 rebounds per game, good for second on the team.
Those three, including several other returners, will be expected to replace the production of the three starters who graduated, including First-Team All-WIAC Maiah Domask, who finished her Pioneer career ranked third in program history in points scored and rebounds. Domask, along with Taylor Gilbert and Aspyn Stewart, combined for nearly 30 points and 17 rebounds per game last season.
Junior guard Addison Baierl, senior center Lara Anger, and sophomore guard Barb Kling will help offset the losses for UW-Platteville. Baierl started six games a year ago and was fifth on the team in rebounding at 2.3 per game. Anger and Kling each appeared in 19 games and earned minutes off the bench.
Head Coach Kelly McNiff enters her fourth season with the program with a career record of 24-35 at UW-Platteville.
