Domask Notches 1000th Career Point in Loss to Warhawks
Milestone comes during 4th quarter run, but Whitewater hangs on, 64-53.
WHITEWATER, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women's basketball team used a full-court, up tempo gameplan to wear down UW-Platteville Friday night en route to a 64-53 victory. Warhawk forward Aleah Grundahl was a perfect 10-10 from the free throw line, helping her lead all scorers with 22 points. With the win, Whitewater completes a two-game sweep of the Pioneers and move to 4-2 on the season. Platteville fell to 1-5.
Early on, the Pioneers weathered Whitewater's pressure with hot shooting from outside. Caitlyn Tipton (Sr. / Rosendale, Wis.), who scored 27 points vs. the Warhawks on Wednesday night, picked up where she left off in the 1st quarter Friday with a pair of three pointers as the visitors hit 4 in the quarter to build a 14-6 early lead. Whitewater answered the barrage from long distance by pounding the offensive glass. Seven offensive rebounds led to a 9-0 advnatage in 2nd chance points and a 24-20 Warhawk lead after one.
The middle quarters saw the Whitewater press begin to wear down the Pioneers. After scoring 20 points in the first quarter, Platteville could only muster 13 points in the 2nd and 3rd quarters combined. After 3, the Warhawks had built to a 15-point lead, 48-33.
An Emily Schumacher 3-pointer one minute into the 4th pushed the Whitewater lead to 19 at 53-34. Over the next three minutes, the Pioneers mounted a furious comeback that featured a 13-1 run and pulled Platteville to as close as seven. The highlight of the rally came at the 5:48 point when Maiah Domask (Sr. / Waupun, Wis.) corraled a loose ball in the paint, put it up and in. For the game, it pulled Platteville to within 54-43. For Domask's career, the basket notched the 1000th point in her collegiate career. The two teams traded baskets over the next few minutes, but ultimately the Pioneers were never able to pull closer than seven. Four Grundahl free throws in the final :30 gave Whitewater their final margin of victory.
Domask finished her memorable night scoring 13 points and pulling down 10 rebounds. The teams each connected on 20 FG's with Platteville holding a 7-4 advantage on made 3-pointers. Whitewater's advantage came on free throws where they went 20-27 compared to 6-10 for Platteville.
The Pioneers return to action next Wednesday, February 24th when they host UW-La Crosse. Tip time is set for 7pm.
