Pioneers fall to WIAC champion Warhawks

Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference regular season champion UW-Whitewater beat visiting UW-Platteville 77-42 Wednesday night. The Warhawks improved to 21-3 overall and clinched sole possession of first place with an 11-2 WIAC mark, while the Pioneers slipped to 6-18, 2-11.
Allison Prestegaard paced the Pioneers with 14 points, and Lexis Macomber added 10. UW-Platteville led 6-4 early on and was within 18-14 at the end of the first quarter, but the Warhawks used a 21-11 second-quarter surge to put distance between the two teams.
Malia Smith scored 15, and Brooke Trewyn had 14 to lead the Warhawks, who held the Pioneers without a three-point basket in eight attempts.
The Pioneers close their season Saturday at UW-River Falls at 3 p.m.
