First-place Warhawks Overpower the Pioneers

PLATTEVILLE, Wis. – The University of Wisconsin-Platteville women's basketball team fell to UW-Whitewater, 81-62, on Wednesday night in the Williams Fieldhouse on Bo Ryan Court.
Senior Claire Poad scored a season-best and a team-high 15 and grabbed eight rebounds to lead the Pioneers. Sophomore Alyssa Krajco added 12 points, seven boards and two blocks.
The conference leading Warhawks were led by Kaitlyn Thill with a game-high 26 points. Katie Burton added 11 points, while Mary Merg rounded out UWW's top scorers with 10.
Senior Elizabeth Lawinger scored on the first possession of the game, giving the Pioneers their only lead of the game. The Warhawks went on a 15-4 run after the first possession, taking a nine-point lead with just under 15 minutes left to halftime. UWW expanded its lead to 14 points, 27-13, at the 8:29 mark, and Pioneers fought back to cut their deficit to five points, 36-31, going into halftime.
Poad scored UW-Platteville's first five points in the second-half cutting UWW's lead to two, 38-33. The Warhawks stopped the Pioneers' little run with a huge 18-3 run, and taking a commanding 17-point lead, 56-39, with just over 12 minute left in the contest. The Pioneers couldn't find a big run of their own as the Warhawks took home the 81-62 victory.
UW-Platteville welcomes UW-La Crosse on Saturday and will honor three seniors on their final game wearing the Orange and Blue on Bo Ryan Court. Tip is set against the Eagles at 5 p.m. in Williams Fieldhouse.
