Women's Basketball Falls Short to UW-River Falls, 61-60

PLATTEVILLE, Wis. – The University of Wisconsin-Platteville women's basketball team fell short to UW-River Falls, 61-60, on Saturday evening in Williams Fieldhouse.
Senior Elizabeth Lawinger recorded a team-high 15 points and four assists, while sophomore Alyssa Krajco netted 14 points and blocked two shots. The Falcons had three double-digit scorers with Brittany Gregorich scoring a game-high 17 points. Richell Mehus went 7-9 at the charity stripe for 14 points and Nikki Guhr tallied 10 points.
The Pioneers grabbed a quick 16-10 lead and expanded it to nine points, 24-15 with 8:53 left in the first-half. UWRF battled back and a three-pointer by Mehus brought the Falcons within one, 30-29, with just over a minute to halftime. On the very next possession, Lawinger responded with a three-pointer of her own giving UW-Platteville a 33-29 lead at halftime.
The Falcons regained the lead, 42-20, at the 13:28 mark in the second-half on a Jessie Van Wyhe layup, and UW-River Falls pushed is lead to as high as five points with just over nine minutes left to play. But the Pioneers found some momentum and regained the lead, 54-52, on a Krajco three-point play with just over two minutes left. The Falcons made seven of their 20 second-half free throws in the final minute taking a 61-57 lead with just seconds left in the game. The Pioneers' Rachel Cropp drained a half-court desperation three-pointer as time expired but it was too little to late as UWRF took home the 61-60 victory.
UW-Platteville goes back on the road on Wednesday when they travel to UW-Stevens Point. Tip is set for 7 p.m. in Berg Gymnasium.
