SUPERIOR, Wis. – The University of Wisconsin-Platteville women's basketball team dropped another conference game, at UW-Superior, 65-59, on Saturday afternoon.
Senior Claire Poad led the Pioneers (5-13, 1-8 WIAC) for the first time this season with 11 points. Fellow senior Elizabeth Lawinger and junior Melissa Carmody added 10 points apiece. Carmody, junior Kim Wellnitz and sophomore Rilee Schmitz all grabbed a game-high seven rebounds.
Hillary Peterson and Connie Urmanski led the Yellowjackets (15-3, 7-2 WIAC) with 16 points apiece. Sally Linzmeier and Kristen Nett each added 12 points rounding out UWS's leading scorers.
The Pioneers came out of the gates quickly by taking their largest lead of the game of six points, 8-2, with just under 15 minutes left in the half. The Yellowjackets responded with a 12-2 run, taking a four-point lead, 14-10, with just over 10 minutes left in the period. A pair of free throws by Lawinger in the final seconds of the half cut the Pioneers deficit to 25-23 going into halftime.
With nearly six and a half minutes left to play, a three-pointer by Nett gave UWS its largest lead of the game of 11 points, 54-43. The Pioneers bounced right back and went on a 10-2 run to get within three, 53-56 with 3:48 left to play. The Yellowjackets held off the Pioneers down the stretch, earning the 65-59 victory.
The Pioneers return to Platteville on Wednesday when they take on UW-Oshkosh at 7 p.m.
