Women’s Basketball Falters at UW-River Falls in WIAC Opener
UW-Platteville women’s basketball team dropped its Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletics Conference (WIAC) opener to UW-River Falls, 66-54, on Saturday night at the Karges Center.
RIVER FALLS, Wis. –The University of Wisconsin-Platteville women's basketball team dropped its Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletics Conference (WIAC) opener to UW-River Falls, 66-54, on Saturday night at the Karges Center.
The Pioneers (2-5, 0-1 WIAC) tallied three double-figure scorers, led by senior Elizabeth Lawinger with 16 points and a game-high three steals. Junior Kim Wellnitz netted 13, while sophomore Alyssa Krajco added11 points of her own.
Brittany Gregorich scored a game-high 19 points and grabbed 13 boards for the Falcons (5-1, 1-0 WIAC), while Brook Lauritzen added 14 points and four blocks.
The Falcons defense came out sharp, limiting the Pioneers to just one field goal in the first nine minutes on one-of-11 shooting. Even though UW-Platteville struggled shooting 5-24 from the floor in the first-half, but converted 10-14 from the charity stripe to trail UWRF, 32-23 at halftime.
The Falcons opened the second half with an 11-0 run to go ahead 43-23. Platteville continued to chip away at the lead and cut the margin by as few as five with three minutes to play, but the Falcons pulled away making five-of-six free throws in the final minute.
The Pioneers wrap up their five-game road swing with at trip to UW-Eau Claire on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
