Carmody’s Career Night Leads the Pioneers Past Luther

A career night by junior Melissa Carmody led the University of Wisconsin-Platteville women's basketball team to a 76-61 victory over Luther College in Tuesday's home opener on Bo Ryan Court.
The Barneveld, Wis. native, scored a career-high 18 points and was 4-6 from beyond the arc, while sophomore Alyssa Krajco had her own career-game with 13 points. Senior Elizabeth Lawinger drove the Pioneer offense dishing out a game-high six assists and added four points and a steal. Luther's Taylor Johnson netted a game-high 19 points with a team-best six rebounds and two steals.
With six ties and four lead changes in the first-half the Pioneers scored eight unanswered to take a 37-26 lead at the 2:50 mark. The Norse responded with their own six point run to end the half to cut UW-Platteville's lead to five, 37-31.
In the second-half the Pioneers didn't let Luther's end of the half get them down as UW-Platteville jumped out to take a 17 point lead, 57-40, by scoring 20 points in the first six minutes. The Norse tried to fight back by cutting the Pioneers lead down to 13 points at the 8:49 mark. Carmody wouldn't allow Luther any closer as she knocked down three straight triples to give the Pioneers their largest lead of the game, 68-46, with 6:41 to play. Luther made a last minute dash but was too little to late as the Pioneers won their second straight game, 76-61.
UW-Platteville improved to 2-1, while the Norse took their first loss of the season, 2-1.
The Pioneers travel to Iowa this weekend squaring off with Wartburg on Saturday and Mount Mercy on Sunday.
