Kim Wellnitz Scores Career-high 22 in 78-66 Win by UW-Platteville Over UW-Oshkosh
University of Wisconsin-Platteville sophomore Kim Wellnitz scored a career-high 22 points and junior Ashley Henry had her first double double of the season to lead the Pioneers to a 78-66 win over UW-Oshkosh on Saturday night at Bo Ryan Court.
The Pioneers (5-6, 2-2 WIAC) shot a season-best 46% from the field in the win. Joining Wellnitz and Henry in double figures was junior Liz Lawinger, who added 19 points, three steals and four assists.
The Titans (5-4, 0-3 WIAC) were led by Megan Wenig, who scored a game-high 23 on four 3-pointers. Katie Kitzke joined her in double figures with 14 on three 3-pointers.
A jumper by Wellnitz with 1:50 left in the first half put the Pioneers up 26-24 and for the remainder of the game. The jumper came in the midst of a 9-1 spurt towards the end of the first 20 minutes.
Coming out of halftime with a five-point lead, 33-28, UW-Platteville scored nine of the first 11 points in the opening 3:48 to take a 42-30 lead. The Pioneers went on to shoot 48% in the final 20 minutes and hit six 3-pointers en route to the win.
Twice, the Titans cut the UW-Platteville lead to seven; however, each of the threats were answered by baskets by Henry and Alyssa Krajco, respectively. The Pioneers made their last seven free throws to seal the victory.
The Pioneers will next travel out of the rigors of the WIAC to the state of California for its next two games, where they will face UC-Santa Cruz on Thursday, Dec. 29 and Redlands on Friday, Dec. 30.
