Bio

Andres Young is entering his twelfth year at UW-Platteville and third as Associate Head Coach. Young serves as the pole vault, hurdles, javelin, and multi coach for the Pioneers. In addition, he handles administrative and meet management duties for the track and field teams. 

During his eleven year tenure, Young has led 41 individual event national qualifiers who have earned 1 National Championship and 21 All-American honors. Young’s athletes have also won 24 Conference Championships, earned 43 All-Conference performances, and set school records in 63 different occasions. 

In 2023, Young coached his first national champion, Will Lawrence in the Javelin. Lawrence’s winning throw of 72.14m (236-8) was the 5^th furthest throw in Division 3 history. In the same season Lawrence set the WIAC Championship record and won the prestigious Drake Relays. Lawrence finished the season undefeated. 

Young was awarded Midwest Regional Coach of the Year Honors for his athlete's performance during the 2016 outdoor season. During the 2016 Outdoor WIAC Championships Young's athletes earned three conference titles and two runner-up finishes. Most notably, Dan Arnold won the 110-hurdles in a new championship record of 13.93 and Matt Dwyer set a new school record in the pole vault with a 17-foot clearance. 

A USATF Level 1, USTFCCA Jumps/Sprints, Hurdles and Relays/Combined Events/Speed Specialist and USTFCCA Strength and Conditioning certified coach, Young began his coaching career at UW-Platteville, working with the Pioneers in 2006 and 2007. Young served as the multi-event coach and directed three Pioneers to school records while coaching the first decathlon national qualifier in program history. He also assisted with the cross country teams in the fall. 

Following his time at UW-Platteville, Young moved on to Alhambra High School in Phoenix, Ariz., where he was an assistant track and field coach and taught biology. As an assistant track and field coach, he was in charge of high jumpers, pole vaulters and long hurdlers, where four athletes qualified for the state meet. One of the four was Jania Featherstone, who finished second in the state in the high jump. He also assisted with coaching distance runners and the cross country team. 

Young returned to the midwest to pursue a master’s degree at Northern Illinois University in kinesiology with an emphasis in exercise physiology and sports psychology. For three years, Young volunteered with the Huskies’ cross country and track and field programs. During the 2011 outdoor track and field season, he took over as interim distance coach for the Dekalb, Illinois based institution. Eleven of his 12 athletes ran career best times during that season. 

A native of Miami, Fla., Young attended UW-Platteville where he was a member of the track and field and cross country teams. Young ran the 400 meters while also competing in the decathlon. He received his degree from UW-Platteville in 2005, majoring in biology with a minor in Spanish. 

He and his wife Stephanie, who is a former UW-Platteville Track and Field All-American, reside in Platteville with son Lucas and daughter Annelise.
