During his time on the UW-Platteville men's track and field team, he qualified to four NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships. He was a 4-time All-American in the discus, finishing in fourth in 1985, third in 1986 and 1987, and fourth in 1988. In 2009, Kamps was inducted into the UW-Platteville Athletic Hall of Fame.
