Pioneers competing for national berths

Several UW-Platteville track and field athletes are vying for places in the NCAA Division III nationals.

Both Justin Wells and David Hahn are already in the meet, set for May 24-26 at Millikin University in Decatur, Ill. Wells has automatically qualified in the 1,500-meter run, and Hahn in the hammer throw.

Wells should be able to compete in the national championships, despite being in a serious car accident after leaving the Athletic Honors Banquet, where he was named the school's athlete of the year, May 6. Wells suffered facial injuries, but teammate Mike Schmitz, the driver, incurred more extensive injuries. Schmitz, who had provisionally qualified for the 10,000-meter run the day before the accident, may be forced to miss nationals.

Also provisionally qualifying are Joe Marks and Brian McIntyre in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, Adam Teunison in the pole vault, Bobbi Erickson in the hammer throw, Kristen Campbell in the discus and Julie Korish in the triple jump. (Provisionally qualifying means if not enough people reach the automatic qualifying marks, those with the next highest marks will be invited.)

Some Pioneers are competing in national qualifying meets today and Friday at UW-La Crosse, and others Friday at North Central and Saturday at UW-Oshkosh.

Track Teams to host Alumni Meet

The UW-Platteville men's and women's track and field teams will have their first competition of the season this Saturday, December 2, at home. The meet will feature the UW-Platteville track and field teams, Loras College, and several UW-P alumni. Running and field events will both begin at noon.

The men's team is looking to have a rebuilding season after losing several All-Americans from last year. Returning All-Americans are senior middle distance runner Justin Wells, senior thrower Dave Hahn, junior sprinter Adam Sanders, and junior thrower Dan Kuehn. Wells, an All-American in the 1500 meter run, is looking to have another stellar track season after being an All-American in cross country this past spring. Hahn, a two-time track and field All-American, leads a strong group of throwers that includes shot put All-American Dan Kuehn plus another shot put national qualifier in Andy Paulsen. The throwing squad looks to lead the team again this year.

Junior All-American Adam Sanders leads an experienced group of sprinters, which also includes junior Michael Peplinski, who qualified for nationals in the 4x400 last season, and sophomores Steve Ross and Ryan Blank.

The jumping crew will be lead by juniors Mike Gratz and Adam Teunissen. Gratz, the team captain, is a national qualifier and conference champion in the high jump while Teunissen was an NCAA provisional qualifier in the pole vault last season.

The UWP women's track and field will be lead by senior Bobbi Erickson and junior Julie Korish. Last season, Erickson qualified for both the indoor and outdoor NCAA Championships in the Weight Throw and Hammer Throw, respectively, while Korish qualified for the outdoor NCAA meet in the triple jump.
