Two school records fall at Wartburg Select
Waverly, Iowa – The Pioneer men's and women's track and field teams competed at the Wartburg Indoor Select Meet on Feb. 1 – 2. Two school records were broken as many athletes advanced in the national rankings in their respective events. Warburg College, University of Dubuque, Simpson College, Central College, Cornell College, and Clarke University were all in attendance.
Breaking his own school record in the heptathlon, Cody Faust competed in the first multi-event of the season and scored 5,021 points. Faust ran a personal best time of 7.37 seconds in the 60m dash, threw a personal best of 11.44m (37-6.5) in the shot put, ran a personal best in the 60m hurdles of 8.65 seconds, and tied his personal best in the pole vault of 4.50m (14-9) to contribute to his record-breaking performance. Faust ranks at No. 3 on the indoor national qualifying list in the heptathlon.
Cassandra Meyer and Jacob Rice competed in the indoor multi-events for the first time in their careers. Rice competed in his first heptathlon, scoring 3,083 points for seventh place. Meyer competed in the women's pentathlon for the first time. She finished in 9th with 1,618 points.
The second school record was established by Zach Lee. Lee ran a school record-breaking time in the 1,000m run, winning the race with a time of 2:26.75. The previous record was 2:28.48 held by Tyler Sigl in 2008.
In the women's 60m dash, Gwen Orr tied her personal best and took second place with 8.15 seconds. Orr improved upon her 200m lifetime best time clocking 26.65 seconds, coming in fourth place. Chenoa Stuhr made her 2019 debut running the 60m dash in 8.39 seconds for seventh place. In the 200m dash, Sydney Soderbeck clocked a personal best time to take tenth with 27.96 seconds.
Paul Rapp won the men's 200m dash with an indoor best time of 22.62 seconds. Teammate Alec Burcham finished in second place with 22.77 seconds. Connor Rupke ran an indoor best time of 23.42 for tenth place.
In the men's 400m dash, Kyle Buechner won with a time of 51.46. Zach Frei took third place with 51.76, Cody Harren finished in ninth with 52.77, and Sean Komro came in 11th place with 53.22 seconds. Kathryn Holter placed fifth in the women's 400m dash crossing the line in an indoor season best time of 1:02.5. Haley Ott took sixth place with 1:04.74.
Jason Voelker finished in second place in the 600m with a time of 1:26.83. Jarod baker took fourth place, running 1:27.99.
Sophomore Kaitlyn Galgon finished in third place in the women's 800m race with a time of 2:21.11. Johanna Meister took fourth with 2:21.85 and Caitlyn Ifft finished in fifth with 2:22.02. Freshman Savannah Palmer placed ninth with a time of 2:32.02. After a fall late in the men's 800m race, senior Nolan Wallenkamp completed the race with a time of 2:07.98.
Zach Klokow ran a personal best time of 4:26.12 for seventh place in the men's mile race. Freshman Ben Trihey came in 11th place with a personal best time of 4:34.48. Coming in seventh in the women's mile race, Anna Drazkowski clocked a personal best 5:46.39.
During the men's 3,000m run, Alex Clark took third with a personal best time of 8:50.26. Grant Munson also ran a personal best in the 3,000m to take sixth place in 9:03.91. Danielle Nelson took fifth in the women's 3,000m with a personal best time of 11:38.40.
Charlie Gifford continued to shine in the 60m hurdles. Gifford crossed the line in 8.18 seconds to win the race. He sits at tied for No. 11 on the national qualifying list. Matt Hokanson ran a personal best time in the 60m hurdles finishing in 8.48 seconds for second place. Jacob DeBonis crossed for third place in 8.67 seconds, Grady Rielly crossed in 8.90 seconds for fifth place, and Cole Stugelmeyer crossed in 9.01 second for seventh place. In the women's 60m hurdle race, Katie Schilling won the race in 9.33 seconds, and teammate Casey Rielly took sixth place with a lifetime best time of 10.00 seconds.
The men's 4x400m relay consisting of Burcham, Buechner, Hokanson, and Rapp won the event with a time of 3:19.26. The Pioneer men's 4x400m relay currently places at No. 2 on the indoor national qualifying list. The women's 4x400m relay took fourth place with 4:11.31. The relay team was comprised of Holter, Galgon, Meister, and Ott.
In the high jump, Pioneer's Noah Steiner won the event with 1.97m (6-5.5). Steiner is currently tied for No. 5 on the indoor national rankings. Freshman Bryce Bierman took third place with 1.87m (6-1.5). Olivia Saucedo took third in the women's high jump, jumping 1.51m (4-11.5). Lexie Stevens placed fifth, in accordance with her misses at previous heights, with a personal best jump of 1.51m (4-11.5).
Jordan Monroe took second place in the men's pole vault, clearing 4.02m (13-2.25). Brittany Ehlen won the women's pole vault, clearing 3.57m (11-8.5). Ehlen is tied for No. 13 on the indoor national rankings. Teammate Jordan Meciej placed fourth with 3.12m (10-2.75).
In long jump, Drew Stanioch took seventh in the men's event with 5.91m (19-4.75) and Antgetina Bean took sixth in the women's event with 4.80m (15-9). Brian Spaeth finished in third place in the men's triple jump, marking 13.13m (43-1). Damani White placed fifth with 12.21m (40-0.75). In the women's triple jump, Schilling took fifth jumping 10.53m (34-6.75).
In the shot put, Sean Cormican threw a personal best 14.40m (47-3) for sixth place. Tyler Bacon made his throwing debut, placing seventh with 13.47m (44-2.5). Alexander Walechka threw a personal best 13.26m (43-6) for eighth place. In the women's shot put Rachel Beuthin took fourth place with a season best throw of 12.98m (42-7). Brianna Hall tied her personal best throw of 12.54m (41-1.75) for sixth place.
Alex Girard threw for third place in the men's weight throw. Girard threw 16.32m (53-6.5). Walechka placed fourth with 16.11m (52-10.25) and Cormican placed sixth with 15.04m (49-4.25). Cole Eastlick took seventh with 14.97m (49-1.5), and Ben Veverka took tenth with 14.24m (46-8.75). In women's weight throw, Beuthin took seventh place with a lifetime best throw 14.66m (48-1.25), and Hall took tenth place with 13.71m (44-11.75).
The Pioneers' next opportunity for competition will be next week at the UW – Platteville Invitational on Saturday, Feb. 9.
