McMiller and Rynes contribute to fifth place team finish at championships
La Crosse, Wis. – On the third and final day of the NCAA DIII Outdoor Track and Field Championships, three more All-American honors were earned by UW-Platteville athletes.
The first All-American honor of the day was earned by a freshman, Rodrick McMiller, in the 100m dash. McMiller ran 10.85 seconds to take third place final heat. About an hour later, McMiller ran in the 200m dash. McMiller ran an aggressive race from the starting blocks to run 21.17 seconds, becoming the national champion in the 200m as he pulled away from the competition in the last 20m of the race.
The Pioneers rounded off the championships in a similar fashion they had started it, with Walker Rynes in the 5,000m run. With nearly 90 degree weather, the runners battled through less than ideal conditions. For Rynes, this was his final race as a collegiate athlete. As the race began to separate, Rynes persevered. He ran 14:50.14 to take sixth place, receiving his second All-American honor.
In team scores, UW-Platteville landed fifth place. The Pioneers were the highest placing WIAC team, with the next highest WIAC team, UW-Whitewater, placing 10th in team scores. Of the seven qualifying athletes from the Pioneers, only one will be graduating. The Pioneers look to the 2018-2019 season to continue to build off the promising, youthful success.
