Pioneer Men Win Eight Events at Wartburg Select
The University of Wisconsin-Platteville men’s and women's track and field teams traveled to the Wartburg Select on Saturday. The men were victorious in eight events on the day.
Among the winners was Aaron Hrubes in the 60-meter dash with a season-best time of 6.93 to post the sixth-fastest time in the nation. Just behind him was Lynn Oyawiri, who was second (6.97) and Casey Goffinet in fifth (7.14).
Also victorious was Matt Ziegler in the 400-meter dash (50.35), Scott Clark in the mile (4:21.27), T.J. Valley in the 60-meter hurdles (8.28).
Ziegler, Hrubes, Ben Farrell and Patrick Kessenich won the 4x400-meter relay in 3:20.62 for the third-fastest time in Division III in 2012.
In addition, the Pioneers also had runner-up finshes from Cody Rudie in the 1,000-meter run (2:44.11) and Mike Schmidt in the 800-meter run (1:58.84). Plus, Chris Czech was third in the 3,000-meter run (9:00.16)
In the field events, Ace McCarty
won the high jump with a season-best clearance of 6-9 ¾ for
the fifth-best performance in Division III in 2012. Chas
Spangenberg led a 1-2-3 sweep by the Pioneers of the pole vault
with a clearance of 14-11. Jake Wiederholt won the shot put with a
toss of 50-7 ½.
In two events that are not competed at the NCAA Championships, the Pioneer women were well represented as senior Ann Tank won the 600-meter run in a time of 1:36.36 and sophomore Danielle Kunkel was second in the 3,000-meter run (10:16.93) and Lisa Kaiser was seventh (11:09.16).
Junior Deidre Dillman was fourth in the 400-meter dash in a time of 58.61 which is the 16th fastest time in Division III in 2012.
Tank, Dillman, Keturah Vangen and Stephanie Wyss were members of the third-place 4x400-meter relay (3:57.78) in the fifth fastest time in the nation in Division III in 2012. Olivia Bukowski was fifth in the 5,000-meter run in a time of 20:48.84.
In the field events, the Pioneers’ Caitlin Thomson won the high jump with a clearance of 5-5 and Mary Katherine Kladar was third with a clearance of 5-3. Kaliann Bauer shared fifth-place honors in the pole vault with a clearance of 9-4 ½ and Morgan Hoover was sixth in the long jump with a jump of 16-1.
