Pointers rally to stun UWP

April 22, 2009

Just when it seemed UW-Platteville was ready for its first conference victory, UW-Stevens Point took it away.

The Pointers rallied with a five-run seventh inning, stunning the Pioneers 8-6 Wednesday. The visitors also won the first game, 9-0.

The loss also spoiled a milestone for Pioneer senior Tera Burr, who had an infield single in the first inning of the nightcap, becoming the 11th player in Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference history to reach 200 career hits. She had four hits, including two triples, on the afternoon.

Brittany Stezskal gave the Pioneers a 6-3 lead in the fifth, when she hit her first collegiate triple to the gap in right-center field. She scored Mandy Cerqua, Chantal McReynolds, and Whitney Foltz, who had all singled.

The Pointers, however, rallied in the seventh. Jessica Berger had a two-run single to center, bring UWSP within 6-5, and Lauren Watkins also singled up the middle, scoring two more runs for the lead. Elyse Nelson had a sacrifice fly to center, scoring the fifth run of the inning.

The Pointers improved to 18-14 overall and 4-8 in the WIAC, while the Pioneers dropped to 5-27, 0-14.

Sara Butts had four hits, including doubles in each of the first two innings, as the Pointers built a 6-0 lead after two innings in the opener. Melisa Wenig drove in five runs on a pair of hits, and Watkins brought home three. Kayla Kastenmeier held the Pioneers to three hits, including two by Burr.

The Pioneers play at Loras Friday at 3 p.m. and then play their final WIAC games Sunday at UW-Superior. UWP must sweep the Yellowjackets or the Pioneers will miss the conference tournament.
