April 8, 2009

Visiting UW-La Crosse beat UW-Platteville twice in softball Wednesday, 4-0 and 9-7. The Eagles overcame a 5-0 deficit to win the nightcap while improving to 19-7 overall and 4-2 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. The Pioneers slipped to 3-17, 0-6.

Chantal McReynolds had a big two-run single in the second inning, helping the Pioneers to the 5-0 advantage. The Eagles' Cara Salm brought in two runs with a single in the fourth, slicing the deficit to 5-4. UW-L took the lead for good with four runs on four hits in the sixth.

Tera Burr led off the Pioneer sixth with a triple and scored on McReynolds' single. Katie Lenz brought in another run with a single, but Megan Pozezinski flew out to right, and Kristin Nelson grounded out to end the threat. The Eagles scored an unearned run in the top of the seventh.

Salm drove in four runs for the Eagles, and Jenna Ahnen had three hits. Burr and McReynolds each had a pair of hits for UWP.

Three Pioneer errors led to three unearned runs in the opener. The Eagles led 4-0 in the third, but Reneee Schuttler shut them out the rest of the way. She struck out seven and did not walk a batter.

UW-L's Heather Schultz was also on top of her game, throwing her fourth complete-game shutout of the year, a two-hitter.

The Pioneers play at UW-Oshkosh Friday at 3 p.m.
