Pioneers snap skid, post win

April 14, 2009

UW-Platteville showed its character Tuesday, ending a 12-game losing streak, which included a game-one 14-0 loss, with a 9-2 victory at the University of Dubuque.

Renee Schuttler kept the Pioneers in the game, scattering 12 hits but stranding 12 runners. UWP then rallied with four runs in the fifth and five more in the sixth for their first win since March 27.

Brittany Kalscheur, Mandy Cerqua, Tera Burr, Chantal McReynolds and Whitney Foltz hit singles in consecutive at-bats in the fifth, and then Megan Pozezinski, Burr, and Foltz hit triples in the sixth.

The young Pioneers, with 15 of the 22 players in their first year, are now 4-20 on the season. The Spartans, who knocked off UW-Whitewater last week, are 10-18. Dubuque out-hit the Pioneers 11-3 in the first game, ended in the fifth by the eight-run rule.

Coach Heather Townsend's club plays at Cornell (Iowa) Thursday, then plays host to UW-River Falls Saturday and UW-Stout Sunday. Both home doubleheaders begin at noon.
