Tim-Burr! Career hits record falls

March 16, 2009

Tera Burr became UW-Platteville's all-time leader in hits, including a key eighth-inning single to lead the Pioneers to a 3-2 victory over Denison Monday in Tucson, Ariz.

Burr tied the record of 163, set by Lynn Nagy in 1990-93, with the extra-inning single. The Pioneers' lone senior then broke the mark by tripling to lead off Monday's second game, a 13-5 loss to Schreiner.

After Chantal McReynolds was placed on second using the international tie-breaker rule in the eighth, Burr bunted and beat the throw to first. McReynolds, who moved to third base, scored on Megan Nelson's sacrifice fly for the go-ahead run.

McReynolds came up with a defensive gem from her shortstop position in the bottom of the eighth, throwing out a Denison runner at the plate. Mandy Cerqua applied the tag for the second out of the inning. Courtney Ryan then induced a pop-out to Cerqua to end the game.

Renee Schuttler and Ryan combined on an eight-hitter. Schuttler scattered six runs over five innings, allowing just one run, while Ryan threw the final three for her first collegiate win.

The Pioneers scored three in the first inning against Schreiner, but yielded 13 runs over the next three innings. Burr had five hits on the afternoon, while Megan Nelson had two in each game. Nelson is now crushing the ball at a .563 clip while Burr is right behind at .524. Jordan Johnson and Whitney Foltz each had two hits against Schreiner, who improved to 8-2 after an 11-hit, 6-steal game.

UW-Platteville, now 2-4, concludes its trip Tuesday playing a pair of Wisconsin teams, Marian and Lakeland.
