Blue Devils rally past Pioneers

April 17, 2009

UW-Stout rallied from a 2-0 sixth-inning deficit to beat UW-Platteville 4-2 Friday night, completing a sweep of the WIAC doubleheader. The visiting Blue Devils won the opener 6-1.

Kristy Hoffman hit a two-run triple to right field, tying the contest at 2-2 in the sixth. She then scored on Jess Grobe's single to right, giving UWS the lead. Sammy Peterson doubled in the second and scored on Nelly Peterson's single for an insurance run in the seventh.

The Pioneers took a 2-0 lead in the third when Tera Burr tripled home Brittany Carlson, who had singled. Chantal McReynolds hit the ball off the pitcher, who could not recover in time to throw Burr out at home and had to make the play to first.

Pitcher Renee Schuttler made that 2-0 lead stand up until the sixth. The freshman was looking for her third win of the week. She struck out six batters in the complete-game effort.

The Blue Devils used a four-run first inning to cruise to the opening-game win. Hoffman allowed just six hits, although one of them was Megan Pozezinski's second home run of the year. Pozezinski homered with out one in the seventh.

UW-Stout improved to 14-16 overall and 4-6 in the WIAC, while the Pioneers fell to 5-23, 0-10.

UW-Platteville plays host to UW-River Falls Saturday at noon.
