Schuttler three-hits Cornell

April 17, 2009

Renee Schuttler tossed a three-hitter, and Brittany Kalscheur and Whitney Foltz each had key RBIs as UW-Platteville beat Cornell 2-1 Thursday in Mount Vernon, Iowa. The host Rams won the opener 7-1.

Schuttler won her second straight decision, limiting the Rams to two singles and a double.

Kalscheur gave the Pioneers a 1-0 lead in the fourth, doubling home Katie Lenz, who walked and stole second. Foltz's sixth-inning single scored Tera Burr, who had singled and stolen second, for a 2-0 lead.

The Rams' Chrissy Rasor had an RBI double in the bottom of the sixth, but Schuttler induced a flyout and struck out the final batter of the inning. In the seventh, Schuttler did not allow a ball out of the infield as she wrapped up the complete-game win.

In the opener, Cornell's Ashton Horn held the Pioneers to three hits in a route-going performance. The Rams had 12 hits and led 3-0 after two innings.

The Pioneers are now 5-21 overall, and the Rams 16-14. UWP plays host to UW-Stout Friday at 4 p.m. and UW-River Falls Saturday at noon.
