Pioneers split with Beloit

Freshman Courtney Ryan pitched her first collegiate complete game, and classmate Megan Pozezinski hit a key two-run double, leading UW-Platteville to a 4-3 win over visiting Beloit Friday night.

The Buccaneers beat the Pioneers 7-6 in the nightcap, splitting the doubleheader that was originally scheduled for Saturday but moved up because of the weekend weather forecast .

Ryan yielded just four hits and no earned runs over seven innings. Errors led to single runs in the first, fourth and sixth. The Pioneers overcame a 2-0 deficit with help of a three-run fifth. Megan Pozezinski struck the big blow, bringing in two runs with a double and then scoring on a Whitney Foltz single. Jordan Johnson had an RBI double in the fourth for UWP's first run.

In the second game, the Bucs' Luaren Rybka hit a three-run inside-the-park home run in the fifth, breaking a 2-2 tie. The Pioneers scored single runs in the sixth and seventh, coming within a single run, but the Bucs' Katy Sandt escaped with the win. Renee Schuttler took the loss for the Pioneers, despite striking out 10 batters. UWP committed five errors inthe chilly conditions, leading to three more unearned runs.

Foltz and Brittany Stezskal each had two hits for the Pioneers, who are now 3-9. The Buccaneers left with a 3-11 mark.

The Pioneers are schedule to play Coe College at home Monday at 3 p.m.
