PEORIA, Ill. – The University of Wisconsin-Platteville softball team opened the 2025 campaign Thursday night with a pair of victories at the Blue Angels Invite. The Pioneers defeated Edgewood College 3-1 before senior Taylor Roughen threw the program's ninth no-hitter in a five-inning 10-1 victory over Knox College.
Roughen (1-0), who's no-hitter was a first by a Pioneer since Ashton Hoeppner's in 2018, tallied 13 strikeouts and walked two. The single-game 13 strikeouts ties for second in the program's record book, two behind Roughen's own record to 15 set last season.
Sophomore Allison Peters had a fantastic day at the plate, finishing the day 6-for-7 with five RBI. Peters batted in the go-ahead runs in the first game and the walk-off 2RBI in the nightcap.
Across the two games, the Pioneers totaled 18 hits, three doubles, one home run, 10 RBI, and five stolen bases.
In game one, the Pioneers got on board in the first inning when sophomore Taylor Lynch advanced to third and then home due to a throwing error. Edgewood quickly tied the game in the bottom of the first and the contest remained tied until Peters homered to left field in the top of the sixth, scoring two runs.
Sophomore Carlie Jo Brownlee got the start in the circle for the Pioneers and pitched two and two-thirds innings, striking out four, walking four and allowing three hits and one earned run. Brownlee was relieved by freshman Morgan Erickson (1-0) who made an impressive collegiate debut, striking out 10, walking one and allowing just one hit and no runs.
In the nightcap, the Pioneers scored four runs in the second frame to take a big lead over the Prairie Fire. The first three runs scored on a throwing error and a sacrifice fly and were followed by sophomore Melissa Dietz doubling to right center to score another run.
UW-Platteville doubled its lead in the fourth inning, starting when senior Felicia Teubert doubled to right field to run in senior Lauren Heuberger who had just doubled down the left line. The Pioneers scored three more runs before the Knox'sf offense returned to the field.
The Prairie Fire scored one unearned run in the top of the fifth before Roughen closed out the top of the fifth with three straight strikeouts. Peters finished the fantastic day with a 2RBI walk-off single through the left side in the bottom of the fifth.
The Pioneers will return to the Louisville Slugger Complex on Friday for the second day of competition where they will face Mount Mary at 10 a.m. and Elmhurst at 2:30 p.m.
*As with every UW-Platteville win this year, the Platteville A&W will be offering a $3 Pioneer burger the day after the win and the Platteville Taco John's will be offering 10 tacos for $10 the day after each Pioneer win.
