PLATTEVILLE, Wis. – After spending much of her spring on the softball field at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville, senior Lauren Heuberger is back at the diamond this summer working as a stadium operations intern for the Kenosha Kingfish Baseball Club in Kenosha, Wisconsin.
The Kingfish are one of 26 teams in the Northwoods League, a summer collegiate baseball league that features some of the top college baseball players in the country. From late May until the middle of the August, each team plays a total of 72 games with only a couple off days and a three-day All-Star break.
The Northwoods League has produced over 340 future Major League Baseball players, with some notable names including Max Scherzer (three-time Cy Young Award winner and World Series Champion), Pete Alonso (2019 Rookie of the Year and two-time Home Run Derby Champion), and Chris Sale (seven-time MLB All-Star and World Series Champion). At the MLB draft this past week, Georgia's Charlie Condon became the highest former Northwoods League player selected when he went third overall to the Colorado Rockies.
Heuberger, a marketing major from Grayslake, Illinois, will see the Kingfish play 36 home games at historic Simmons Field this summer. Teams in the Northwoods League rely a lot on the help of interns and part-time staff, which has allowed Heuberger to gain valuable experience in several different areas of the organization over the past couple months.
Heuberger shared some of her experiences at the the internship below:
