PLATTEVILLE, Wis. – The University of Wisconsin-Platteville softball team (22-14, 2-10 WIAC) dropped a pair of games to No. 18 nationally ranked UW-Oshkosh (34-2, 10-2 WIAC) on Wednesday at the UW-Platteville Softball Complex. The Pioneers fell by scores of 3-0 and 4-0.
In the first game, even though the Titans outhit the Pioneers 10-2, UW-Platteville managed to keep a comeback in sight for the entirety of game. The Pioneers' best chance at jumping on to the scoreboard fell in the second inning when a hit by pitch, senior Danielle Trumbo's single to center field and a walk loaded the bases with two outs. The Titans took a 2-0 lead into the seventh and an RBI triple to right field gave the visitors their 3-0 advantage in game one.
Junior Taylor Roughen (14-7) pitched a complete first game where she struck out three, walked none and allowed 10 hits.
The Pioneers kept the game close again in the second half of the doubleheader and trailed 1-0 going into the sixth inning. A pair of doubles in the sixth extended the Titans' advantage to 4-0. The Pioneers had three batters get on base in the bottom of the sixth frame, but UW-Oshkosh's Abby Freismuth (11-0) finished the job in the circle with a pair of strikeouts to keep the Pioneers off the board.
Sophomore Carlie Jo Brownlee (6-7) pitched the first 5.1 innings and struck out two, walked three and allowed five hits and four runs.
The Pioneers will return to action to close out their season on Saturday, May 4 when they head to UW-La Crosse for a doubleheader starting at 2 p.m.
