STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The University of Wisconsin-Platteville softball team was dealt two losses to No. 22 nationally ranked UW-Stevens Point on Monday. The Pioneers (21-7, 2-4 WIAC) fell by scores of 1-4 and 1-3 to the Pointers (24-3, 5-1 WIAC) at McCarty Memorial Field.
In the opener, four of the five runs scored were due to home runs by both teams. The Pointers jumped out of the gates early and took a 1-0 lead after a home run in the first. Freshman Allison Peters responded with a home run of her own in the top of the fourth to tie up the game, but another Pointer homered in the fourth in order for UW-Stevens Point to regain the lead. The home team added two more runs before the game was over.
Junior Taylor Roughen (14-3) pitched all seven innings in the circle and struck out five, walked one and allowed nine hits.
In the second half of the doubleheader, the Pioneers were first on the board thanks to a RBI single through the left side by Peters in the first frame. The Pointers tied and took a one-run lead in the bottom of the same innings thanks to an RBI groundout to third base and a run scored on a fielding error.
UW-Platteville battled back in the second inning, but three runners were left stranded on base and UW-Stevens Point maintained their lead. The Pointers added one more run in the third, extending their lead to 3-1.
Overall, both teams tallied six hits apiece in the game, while the Pioneers committed two errors.
Three Pioneers spent time in the circle in the second game with sophomore Carlie Jo Brownlee (5-4) pitching the first three innings.
The Pioneers continue their busy week on Tuesday, April 23 when they host UW-Whitewater starting at 4 p.m.
