Pioneers sweep Spartans in 10 innings
DUBUQUE, Iowa – The University of Wisconsin-Platteville softball team stormed the University Dubuque Spartans Thursday by scores of 12-3 and 10-2, taking both games of the doubleheader in five innings. The Pioneers (19-3) totaled four homeruns, a triple, six doubles and 24 RBI across the two wins over the Spartans (6-17).

DUBUQUE, Iowa – The University of Wisconsin-Platteville softball team stormed the University Dubuque Spartans Thursday by scores of 12-3 and 10-2, taking both games of the doubleheader in five innings. The Pioneers (19-3) totaled four homeruns, a triple, six doubles and 22 RBI across the two wins over the Spartans (6-17).
Junior Jordan Johnson went 5-for-5 at the plate and tallied eight RBI on the day.
In the first game, the Pioneers put up three runs in all but one inning, with a double to centerfield by Johnson scoring the first of 12 runs. The Pioneers outhit the Spartans 11-8 in the opener and Dubuque committed both of the games two errors.
Taylor Roughen (12-1) captured the win in the circle in the first game as the Pioneer struck out two, walked none and allowed eight hits in five innings.
Sophomore Carlie Jo Brownlee had a career-best in the nightcap, striking out nine while throwing the complete game. Brownlee also walked two batters and gave up three hits and two earned runs.
Leading the way in the second game was senior Danielle Trumbo who went 3-for-3 while scoring three runs. The Pioneers started the game scoring one run in the first and second innings, but after returning from a rain-delay, UW-Platteville pulled away with seven runs in the third inning. Freshmen Felicia Teubert and Allison Peters led the way in the third as they each homered, scoring the first four of the seven runs.
The Pioneers outhit the Spartans 13-3 in the second game, but committed more errors with three compared to Dubuque's two.
UW-Platteville will return to action on Saturday, April 13 when they travel to UW-River Falls for a WIAC doubleheader starting at 2 p.m.
