PLATTEVILLE, Wis. – The University of Wisconsin-Platteville softball team (13-3) split Thursday's home opener with Loras College (13-7) at the UW-Platteville Softball Complex. The Duhawks claimed the first game by a score of 2-1 after eight innings. The Pioneers reversed the score in the nightcap to claim their own 2-1 victory.
While both games were low scoring affairs, the opening contest remained tied at 0-0 after seven innings. The Duhawks scored a run off a fielders choice before the eventual game winning run scored on a single to shortstop. Freshman Mia Savage singled to left field in the bottom of the inning which scored one run, but Loras kept its lead intact, leaving two stranded on base at the conclusion of the game.
Both pitchers went the distance in the opener. Loras' Ashlyn Hemm (5-2) struck out 15, walked two and allowed four hits while junior Taylor Roughen (8-1) struck out nine, walked two and allowed seven hits.
In the nightcap, the Pioneers tallied two runs and two hits which ultimately proved to be all that was needed.
The Duhawks struck first and put up one run in the third. However, the Pioneers tied the score when senior Kendall Drake ran home on a wild pitch in the fourth inning. Felicia Teubert tripled in the bottom of the sixth to drive in a second run to take the lead. It was then Teubert an inning later who made the diving catch in left field to secure the third and final out of the game.
Sophomore Carlie Jo Brownlee pitched the first 5.1 innings and struck out four, walked five and allowed three hits. Taylor Roughen (9-1) relieved Brownlee and struck out two, walked none and allowed two hits.
The Pioneers return to action and the UW-Platteville Softball Complex on Friday, March 29 when they host Buena Vista at 3 and 5 p.m.
