LEESBURG, FL – The University of Wisconsin-Platteville softball team (10-2) cruised to a 9-2 victory over Wesleyan (Conn.) prior to driving in the go-ahead runs in the top of the seventh inning to defeat Kean 10-8.
The bats started and stayed hot in the first game, as the Pioneers got on the board when sophomore Alex Davis' sacrifice fly scored the first of three runs in the second inning. UW-Platteville added three additional runs an inning later and took the 9-2 lead after six innings.
The Pioneers outhit Wesleyan 15-5 and tallied four stolen bases.
Junior Taylor Roughen (6-0) pitched another complete game, striking out eight, walking one and allowing five hits across the seven innings.
The game against Kean came down to the wire, but a double by freshman Allison Peters in the top of the seventh drove in the go-ahead run plus another.
In the second inning, a two RBI bunt by freshman Mia Savage and Peters' first double of the game scored two runs apiece to give the Pioneers a 5-0 lead, but it was short-lived as Kean scored four runs in the bottom of the inning. The game continued to keep fans on the edge of their seats and the game sat tied 8-8 going into the final inning. UW-Platteville reclaimed the lead and kept the tying run from ever getting on base before the final out.
Four Pioneers split duties in the circle, with sophomore Carlie Jo Brownlee pitching the first 1.2 innings where she recorded three strikeouts, two walks and five hits. Roughen (7-0) entered the game in fifth and struck out four, walked none and allowed seven hits on the way to another victory.
The Pioneers will wrap up their spring break trip in Florida on Friday when they take on Chicago at 10:15 a.m. and Monmouth at 12:30 p.m.
*As with every UW-Platteville win this year, the Platteville A&W will be offering a $3 Pioneer burger the day after the win and the Platteville Taco John's will be offering 10 tacos for $10 the day after each Pioneer win.
