Pioneers add two more shutouts to list of Peoria wins

PEORIA, Ill. – The University of Wisconsin-Platteville softball team (4-0) defeated both opponents in the second and final day of the Peoria Invite. The Pioneers first shutout Mount Mary  (1-2) 7-0 in the morning and junior Jordan Johnson's homerun secured the 1-0 victory over Elmhurst College (0-1) in the afternoon. 

In the opener, senior Payton Marvin got to work stealing second, advancing to third on a ground out and scoring the first run on a passed ball. Junior Felicia Teubert doubled the lead three at-bats later on a double. In the second inning, another double by freshman Allison Peters scored two more runs and a sacrifice fly by Marvin brought in the team's fifth run. The Pioneers added runs in the fourth and the sixth to extend their lead to 7-0. 

Teubert (1-0) captured the win, allowing zero hits, walking none and striking out one in three innings. Teubert took over in the circle following junior Taylor Roughen's start where she tallied four strikeouts, walked one and allowed one hit in two innings pitched. 

Roughen went on to pitch a complete game against Elmhurst and added six more strikeouts, allowed four hits and walked just one batter.  

Both teams went three and out in the first and the battle of the defenses stayed in the forefront until in the top of the sixth, with two outs, Johnson homered to score the go-ahead run. 

UW-Platteville will take a break and return to action on Sunday, March 10 when they play Macalester in the opening game of the team's trip to Florida.
