PLATTEVILLE, Wis. –Payton Marvin of the University of Wisconsin-Platteville softball team spent a lot of time outdoors this summer while serving as a Parks and Rec intern through the Wisconsin DNR at the Black River State Forest.
Marvin, a forensic investigation major from Iron Ridge, Wisconsin, worked at the 68,000-acre forest in central Wisconsin after wrapping up her junior year at UW-Platteville. Camping, canoeing, hiking, skiing are some of the recreational opportunities offered at Black River State Forest, and visitors may see elk while exploring the forest.
Marvin shared some of her experiences during the internship below:
What have you done at your internship so far?
This internship consists of several different aspects. I work as maintenance while cleaning the campgrounds and trails. I also work with customer service in the office.
How did you hear about the internship and what was the hiring process like?
My dad sent it to me while I was at school. The hiring process was simple as it just involved submitting a resume with three letters of recommendation. After that I got a phone interview with three individuals of the state forest.
What skills have you learned that will translate to your career goals?
The two biggest skills that will translate from this into my career is an independent work style and a different level of communication. This internship has allowed me to work independently on days and manage my own tasks. It also builds my communication skill with the public through community relations.
What can you take from this internship to carry over into your athletic career at UW-Platteville?
I think the aspect I can carry from this internship to my athletic career is the idea of how everyone plays a different but important role. During my internship, everyone does different tasks for the most part and it all allows our state forest to run smoothly. This can translate into softball and allow me to realize that no matter what your position/job is, it's always important.
Have you enjoyed the internship so far?
I have thoroughly enjoyed this internship as there is always something different to do every day.
