PLATTEVILLE, Wis. – The University of Wisconsin-Platteville softball team split Sunday's WIAC doubleheader against UW-Stout. The Pioneers (21-11, 6-4) pulled ahead for a 4-3 win in game one before dropping the nightcap 5-2 to the Blue Devils (8-21, 2-6).
The team also recognized its two seniors in between games, recognizing Claire Bakkestuen and Amanda Stanczuk.
The Blue Devils were quick out of the gates as they put up two in the first off a double to left field, but UW-Platteville cut their lead in half in the bottom of the first when junior Payton Marvin stole home on a struck out swinging.
Stanczuk tied the game in the third with an RBI double to left, but UW-Stout took the lead once again in the sixth with an RBI double to right field.
With two outs in the sixth, sophomore Taylor Roughen doubled to left and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Bakkestuen walked and sophomore Alexandria Davis singled through the left side to bring in the tying run. Junior Danielle Trumbo then followed Davis with a single down the left line to send in the go-ahead run.
Roughen struck the first two batters out swinging and a grounder to Stanczuk secured the third out and the win.
Bakkestuen pitched the first 5.1 innings, striking out four, walking two and allowing nine hits with three runs (two earned). Roughen (11-4) took the win and struck out three, walked none and allowed zero hits in 1.2 innings.
In the second game both teams put up a single run to remain locked 1-1 before each team went three-up, three-down in the fourth.
The Blue Devils benefited from a pair of errors in the fifth and two RBI to pull ahead 5-1. The Pioneers added one of their own in the bottom of the fifth off an RBI single from Stanczuk, but UW-Platteville failed to get on base in the final two innings.
Roughen (11-5) suffered the loss in the second game, striking out two, walking none and allowing six hits and five runs (two earned).
The Pioneers will return to action at the UW-Platteville Softball Complex on Wednesday, April 26 when they host Beloit College. First pitch of the doubleheader is scheduled for 3 p.m.
