LA CROSSE, Wis. – The University of Wisconsin-Platteville softball team fell just short of snapping UW-La Crosse's nine-game win streak on Tuesday afternoon at North Campus Field. The Eagles, who are receiving votes in the NFCA Top-25 Poll and leading the WIAC standings, held off the Pioneers in game one, 2-0 and the nightcap, 4-2.
In the opener, UW-La Crosse (21-8, 9-1 WIAC) drove in one run in the 3rd and another in the 4th to take game one.
UW-Platteville (12-16, 4-6 WIAC) was ready to rally in game two and came out swinging, as did the Eagles. A 2RBI homerun in the 1st frame gave UW-La Crosse an early lead. The Pioneers battled and after leaving the 2nd inning with three runners stranded on base, a single by Rachel Plautz in the 3rd frame followed by a homerun by Claire Bakkestuen tied the game 2-2. The Eagles reclaimed the lead in the 5th by banking two more runs which would be the insurance needed to take the nightcap.
Jordan Johnson (6-2) suffered the loss in game two striking out none, walking one and surrendering eight hits and four runs in 4.1 innings. Bakkestuen closed the second game and struck out two, walked one and allowed one hit. Bakkestuen (4-6) also pitched a complete first game striking out five, walking none and allowing eight hits and two runs.
Plautz finished the day 3-7 and Bakkestuen finished 2-6 and recorded the team's lone homerun and both RBIs.
The Pioneers will return to action on Sunday, May 1 when they host UW-Oshkosh at 2 and 4 p.m. for Senior Day at the UW-Platteville Softball Complex.
