Big inning locks down win to conclude Florida trip
CLERMONT, Fla. – The University of Wisconsin-Platteville softball team wrapped up its Florida spring break trip with a 6-4 victory over Washington College (5-6). Earlier Friday, the Pioneers (6-8) suffered a late 3-0 loss to Geneseo (6-2).

CLERMONT, Fla. – The University of Wisconsin-Platteville softball team wrapped up its Florida spring break trip with a 6-4 victory over Washington College (5-6). Earlier Friday, the Pioneers (6-8) suffered a late 3-0 loss to Geneseo (6-2).
In game one, the score stayed locked at 0-0 until Geneseo lucked out and scored one run off a dropped fly ball. They added two more in the 6th to pull ahead. McKenna Rommel suffered the loss and allowed two hits and two runs in five innings. Claire Bakkestuen took over and finished the game striking out two and allowing two hits and one run in two innings pitched.
In the final game of the trip, Washington jumped out to an early lead tallying two runs in the 1st inning and two more in the 2nd. The tides quickly turned in the 4th when the first three Pioneers singled to load the bases. Alexandria Davis was then hit by the pitch to score one run. Calista Fuehrer then banged a double to center field to score two more runs and cut Washington's lead to 4-3 with one out. Amanda Stanczuk stepped up and hit a 2RBI single to take the 5-4 lead before the final out of the inning. Danielle Trumbo singled to right field to bat in one more run in the top of the 7th and the Pioneers finished the day with three batters and three outs for the win. Rommel pitched the first 1.2 innings before Bakkestuen finished the last 5.1 innings to secure the win and struck out one, walked three and allowed four hits and no runs.
The Pioneers will return to action on Saturday, March 26 when they host Cornell College in their home opener at the UW-Platteville Softball Complex with game one of the doubleheader against the Rams scheduled for noon.
