CLERMONT, Fla. – The University of Wisconsin-Platteville softball team dropped its opening pair of spring trip games in Florida. The Pioneers (4-4) let an early lead by The College of New Jersey (2-1) take game one 4-0 before a tough fifth inning allowed William Paterson (2-1) to take game two 7-0.
In game one, TCNJ put two runs on the board in the top of the first and doubled that lead over the next two innings to score the only runs of the game. The Pioneers left eight runners stranded over the course of the game and were unable to close the gap. Rachel Plautz led UW-Platteville at the plate tallying two hits. McKenna Rommell suffered the loss and pitched the first 1.1 innings and allowed three hits and three runs. Jordan Johnson relieved Rommell and struck out one and allowed two hits and a run over four innings before Claire Bakkestuen closed the game and added two strikeouts.
In the second game, the Pioneers only trailed 1-0 going into the bottom of the fifth, but back-to-back homeruns and a 2RBI single to right field increased William Paterson's lead to 6-0. The leaders added one more in the sixth inning to take the Pioneers' deficit to 7-0. Danielle Trumbo led the Pioneers at the plate in game two and went 2-3. Bakkestuen suffered the loss and tallied four strikeouts, walked one and allowed seven hits and three runs.
The Pioneers will return to action on Monday and will face St. Scholastica at 9 a.m. and Wesleyan (Conn.) at 11:30 a.m. in Clermont, Florida.
