Pioneers Shutout Pointers for Split
STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The University of Wisconsin-Platteville softball team split a pair of non-conference games against UW-Stevens Point on Wednesday. The Pioneers (12-12) fell 9-1 in game one to the Pointers (18-13) and took the nightcap with a 3-0 11-hit shutout for the split.

STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The University of Wisconsin-Platteville softball team split a pair of non-conference games against UW-Stevens Point on Wednesday. The Pioneers (12-12) fell 9-1 in game one to the Pointers (18-13) and took the nightcap with a 3-0 11-hit shutout for the split.
Senior Haili Cota paced the Pioneers going 3-7 on the day.
In the opener, UW-Platteville narrowed the Pointers' lead to 2-1 in the 5th frame with a sacrifice fly by junior Riley Kelsch to score one run. The one-run deficit was short-lived and the Pioneers were unable to get out of trouble in the next frame as UW-Stevens point tallied seven runs to end the opener in six innings.
UW-Platteville immediately overcame the game one loss as Cota scored in the 1st inning of the nightcap and the Pioneers took their first lead of the day. UW-Platteville extended its lead to 3-1 in the 4th frame off a single to centerfield by freshman Cassie Oelke which scored two including sophomore Claire Bakkestuen who was intentionally walked prior to Oelke.
Bakkestuen (4-2) took the win for the Pioneers in game two while giving up nine hits and striking out three in five innings pitched. Senior Ashton Hoeppner (4-7) returned to the circle to close out the nightcap and earned her fifth save of the season. In all, Hoeppner surrendered eight hits, walked five and struck out four across the two games and six innings pitched.
Makenna Tkach (13-5) took the win in game one holding the Pioneers to three hits while striking out three and walking one in the six innings pitched. Lauren Lindahl (1-3) suffered the loss in the second contest and struck out one and gave up one hit and run in two innings.
The Pioneers will return to action on Friday, April 30 when they return to the UW-Platteville Softball Complex and WIAC play. UW-Platteville will face UW-La Crosse in a conference doubleheader starting at 3 p.m.
