OSHKOSH, Wis. – The University of Wisconsin-Platteville softball team dropped both games of Tuesday's doubleheader at the UW-Oshkosh Softball Park. UW-Oshkosh (13-5, 5-1 WIAC) took sole possession of first in the WIAC after holding on for a narrow 3-2 win in game one over UW-Platteville (9-10, 3-4 WIAC) and then defeating the Pioneers 8-4 in the nightcap.
Sophomore Amanda Stanczuk paced the Pioneers in game one going 2-for-3 with one RBI. Junior Angela Laabs and senior Haili Cota each went 2-for-3 and led the Pioneers in game two. The Pioneers tallied three doubles among the 14 hits while committing just one error across the two contests.
In game one, the Titans jumped to an early lead scoring one run in the 1st inning. Stanczuk doubled in the top of the 5th to score one run and knot the score 1-1. UW-Oshkosh reclaimed the lead with two runs in the bottom of the same inning. The Pioneers had opportunity in the 7th and narrowed the lead to 3-2 off another base hit by Stanczuk, but the Titans tallied the final two outs with runners left on first and third base.
Game two saw an early 6-0 lead in favor of UW-Oshkosh after two innings. UW-Platteville had a big 6th inning, scoring three runs and cutting the Titans' lead to 8-4. However, it would not be enough as UW-Oshkosh retired the first three Pioneers of the 7th inning to lock down the win and the WIAC doubleheader sweep.
Senior Ashton Hoeppner (3-6) suffered the loss in game one striking out two, walking one and giving up eight hits and three runs in six innings pitched. Maddie Fink (7-2) took the win striking out two and walking three while allowing seven hits and two runs in seven innings.
Senior Abby Burns (3-3) took the loss in the second contest striking out one, walking one and giving up six hits and five runs. Sophomore Claire Bakkestuen moved into the circle in the second inning and struck out four, walked one and gave up 10 hits and three runs as she closed out the day for the Pioneers. Mia Crotty (4-2) was awarded the win and struck out one and walked two while giving up six hits and four runs in six innings.
UW-Platteville will return to action and face off against UW-Stout on Saturday, April 24. First pitch of the WIAC doubleheader is set for 2 p.m. at the UW-Platteville Softball Complex.
