Pioneers take one from Warhawks
WHITEWATER, Wis. – The University of Wisconsin-Platteville softball team stole the victory late in the first game to defeat UW-Whitewater 13-8 in game one before falling 5-1 in game two on Wednesday afternoon at the van Steenderen Complex.

WHITEWATER, Wis. – The University of Wisconsin-Platteville softball team stole the victory late in the first game to defeat UW-Whitewater 13-8 in game one before falling 5-1 in game two on Wednesday afternoon at the van Steenderen Complex.
In game one, it was tied up at seven each with the Pioneers batting in the top of the sixth when Alejandra Ochoa doubled to center field to score Rachel Plautz and take the lead.
UW-Platteville's hitting was on point in game one with two Pioneers recording home runs when Rachel Martin went for the long ball in the first inning and Rachel Plautz socked another in the fourth. The Pioneers outhit the Warhawks 10-9 with Martin going 2-for-3 at the plate.
Errors on the home team also stifled UW-Whitewater's lead as the Pioneers racked up eight unearned runs against the Warhawks.
Ashton Hoeppner was in the circle for the Pioneers and struck out two, allowed seven hits and seven runs in four and two-thirds inning. Abby Burns (W, 6-6) took over for Hoeppner and struck out two, allowed two hits and one run with no walks.
Bella Matthia surrendered four hits, six runs, and four walks with four strikeouts before Dani Bleslada (L, 2-2) took over in the circle for the Warhawks and suffered the loss.
In game two, a couple of big innings proved too much for the Pioneers to overcome. After taking a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third, UW-Whitewater's Meg Cohrs doubled to right center to score two runs and extend the lead to 3-0.
The Pioneers narrowed the Warhawks' lead to 3-1 in the top of the fifth with a single and RBI by Chaela West, but Cohrs once again stepped up to the plate and singled up the middle to score two more runs. The 5-1 Warhawk lead held for the split with the Pioneers.
Ochoa led the Pioneers' hitting in game two and went 2-for-3 and scored one run.
Hoeppner (L, 6-9) suffered the loss and struck out two while allowing five hits, one walk, and three runs. Julia Camardo (W, 8-6) pitched all seven innings with seven strikeouts and allowed five hits and one run.
UW-Platteville is now 15-17, 5-5 WIAC while UW-Whitewater is 20-10, 7-3 WIAC.
The Pioneers have a quick turn-around and return to action Thursday at home when they host Loras College at 5:30 and 7:30 p.m.
