PLATTEVILLE, Wis. – A four-run top of the first inning sent UW-Platteville on their way to a 10-2 game one win over UW-River Falls Saturday afternoon at the UW-Platteville Softball Complex. The Pioneers outhit the Falcons six to three in the backend of the doubleheader, but UW-Platteville (16-12, 3-5) was limited to just one run in a 2-1 loss. With the games originally scheduled to be played at UW-River Falls (17-7, 2-2), the Falcons were the designated home team for both matchups.
Cayleen Ryan tied the UW-Platteville single game hits record in game one, going 5-for-5 with five RBI and two runs scored. Her first inning double scored two, and she collected RBI singles in each the fourth, sixth, and seventh innings.
Abby Jaques put together an almost equally impressive game with four singles and two runs scored. Ashton Hoeppner (10-7) threw all seven and didn't give up an earned run while striking out six Falcons.
The backend of the doubleheader was a game dominated by pitching although the Pioneers had opportunities to score more runs. UW-Platteville had runners in scoring position in four innings, but went 0-for-8 in their opportunities and were only able to put together an RBI fielder's choice that came in the fourth.
After walking the leadoff hitter in the bottom of the first Abby Burns went on to retire 13 consecutive Falcons. She gave up her first two hits of the game with one out in the fifth inning with the second hit being a double to tie the game at 1-1. Burns responded to get the final two outs of the innings.
Kate Snook (0-1) came on to pitch in the six and looked like she was going to get out of a jam with runners at second and third, but confusion in the outfield resulted in a dropped ball and UW-River Falls' second run of the game.
UW-Platteville was sat down in order in the seventh to end the game.
The Pioneers hit the road for a doubleheader at UW-Stout tomorrow afternoon. Game one is set to begin at 12 p.m.
