PLATTEVILLE, Wis. – A blowout and a nail biter both fell UW-Platteville's way Friday afternoon at the Softball Complex. UW-Platteville (15-11, 2-4) swept the doubleheader originally scheduled to be played at UW-Stevens Point (11-16, 0-4) on April 14, but rescheduled and relocated due to snow, 13-2 (5 innings) and 3-2.
In game one the Pioneers collected 15 hits in five innings, and nine batters had an RBI. Abby Jaques, Shannon Gaul, Alejandra Ochoa, and Rachel Bonnell all had multi-RBI performances.
Gaul got the scoring started in the top of the first for UW-Platteville with a line drive up the middle to score Jessy Tanel. The Pointers responded with two runs in the bottom of the first, but UW-Platteville would go on to score 12 runs unanswered. The Pioneers scored in four of five innings, and hung a seven spot in the second inning.
Ashton Hoeppner threw four innings for UW-Platteville, striking out seven Pointers and walking none. Kate Snook came on to throw a scoreless fifth inning.
Jaques led off game two with a walk, advanced to second on a ground ball and third on a wild pitch, and scored on another groundball by Gaul to put the Pioneers up 1-0. UW-Stevens Point would even the score in the bottom of the second on a UW-Platteville fielder's choice.
The two teams traded runs in the third to push the score to 2-2. Jaques led off the top of the third with another walk before stealing second and third base. Cota followed with a ground ball to create the Pioneers second run.
Heading into the top of the fifth UW-Platteville had been held to just one hit, but a second hit was all they would need. In her third plate appearance of the game, Jaques sent a frozen rope over the left center fence for her second home run of the season and a 3-2 Pioneers' lead.
Snook came on in the fifth to relieve starter Abby Burns and threw two clean innings. Snook worked into the seventh and was replaced by Hoeppner after getting one out. The Pointers loaded the bases, but Gaul turned an unassisted double play to end the game. With the bases load, Gaul snagged a line drive at third and turned to tag out the runner who had jumped too far off the base.
UW-Platteville secured the win despite being outhit by UW-Stevens Point 11-2. The Pioneers reached base just five times, with Jaques accounting for three of those occasions. She also scored all three runs for UW-Platteville.
The Pioneers take on UW-River Falls (16-6, 1-1) Saturday afternoon at the UW-Platteville Softball Complex with first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m. The Falcons went 1-1 Friday night against UW-Whitewater at the Softball Complex in a neutral field doubleheader.
