MOUNT VERNON, Iowa – Two days after giving up 12 runs in a pair of games in their WIAC opener, the UW-Platteville pitching staff surrendered only a single run to Cornell in their doubleheader Tuesday night. Originally scheduled to be played at UW-Platteville (11-9), the games were moved to Cornell (12-10) due to travel restrictions with the Pioneers remaining the home team.
Abby Burns threw six innings of shutout ball in UW-Platteville's 2-0 game one win, and Ashton Hoeppner threw her seventh complete game in a 3-1 game two victory. The duo kept in check a Cornell offense that came into the night averaging over six runs per game.
Game one was a pitching duel between Burns and the Ram's Katlyn Little with each team only able to put together four hits apiece. Little threw five shutout innings herself until the Pioneers capitalized on a big Cornell miscue in the sixth.
After Abby Jaques led off the bottom of the frame with a single, a Ram's throwing error on a Haili Cota groundball scored Jaques all the way from first. Two batters later, a Rachel Martin bunt single plated Cota for the second unearned run of the inning.
Hoeppner came on in the seventh to earn her second save of the season. Although Burns struckout just one, she forced Cornell into ten groundballs and gave up just one walk for her first career win.
The Pioneers took advantage of a Cornell error once again in game two, with all three of their runs in the bottom of the third being scored as unearned. With the bases loaded and one out Shannon Gaul sent a short popup to the Ram's first baseman. The ball was ruled an infield fly, but Jaques scampered home when the ball popped out of the first baseman's glove. Martin followed with a two RBI double that was rocketed off the left field fence.
On the rubber, Hoeppner lived by the bend but don't break philosophy. The Ram's were able to put a runner in scoring position in five innings, but Hoeppner gave up just one run and twice got out of bases loaded situations. She finished with ten strikeouts while scattering nine hits.
Martin had four hits on the night and collected the only three RBI's for the Pioneers.
UW-Platteville hosts their second home matchups of the season on Thursday with a doubleheader against Dubuque. First pitch is 4 p.m.
