The University of Wisconsin-Platteville softball team beat visiting Loras College 9-5 Tuesday night, surpassing last year's win total already this year. The Duhawks won the first game 8-2.
First-year Coach Andie Varsho, hired after the program went 4-26 in 2016, has the Pioneers off to a 5-11 start this season.
Win number five was aided by a five-run second inning. Madison Melms stroked an RBI double, and Kayla Kampmeier hit a two-run single to help erase an early 3-0 Loras lead. The Duhawks sliced the advantage to 5-4 in the third, but Jessy Tanel smacked an RBI double in the fourth and a two-run home run in the sixth to put the game away. Jess Butzen earned the win in the circle, scattering 11 hits and striking out six.
In the opener, the Duhawks scored six runs over the final two frames to break open a pitchers' duel. Lauren Fritz, Cate Paulsen and Bria Lenten all drove in runs during a four-run sixth inning. Hailey Truman led the Pioneers with a pair of hits and their lone RBI.
The Pioneers return to their home field Thursday to face Wartburg in a 3 p.m. non-conference doubleheader.
