PLATTEVILLE, Wis. – The University of Wisconsin-Platteville softball team fell to UW-Eau Claire, 13-7 and 13-3 in five innings, on Sunday at the UW-Platteville Softball Complex.
The Pioneers started the day with three consecutive hits, but only pushed one run across.
The Blugolds responded with two runs of their own in the top of the second frame, and then added one more in the third, 3-1.
UW-Platteville took advantage of an extra out in the third, as junior Haley Salazar tied the game up with a two-RBI double, 3-3.
UWEC busted the game wide open in the fifth with two home runs and scoring a total of six runs.
The Blugolds put up two more runs in the sixth, 11-3, but the Pioneers stayed alive by scoring a run in the bottom half of the frame, 11-4.
A couple of Pioneer miscues helped UWEC chalk up two runs in the seventh. 13-4,
UW-Platteville made a run at the Blugolds with the Pioneers' last at-bats. Sophomore Carley Rote led the inning off with a double and scored on freshman Chelsey Walker's single through the right side. Walker scored two batters later on a wild pitch. Junior MJ Patten delivered the final RBI of the game with two out, scoring Salazar, 13-7.
Freshman Jess Butzen suffered the loss, allowing nine runs on 10 hits in 4.2 innings pitched.
Patten led the Pioneer hitters with a 3-for-5 game, while junior Lisa Karau, Salazar and Walker each recorded two hits.
UWEC's Fischer homered on the second pitch of the nightcap. The Pioneers' Rote answered with a three-run homer in the bottom of the first, 3-1.
The Blugolds used some clutch hitting in the third frame to score six runs, taking a 7-3 lead.
UWEC then put the game out of reach in the fifth, scoring six more runs on five hits, 13-3.
Sophomore Cassie Roach took the loss, while only getting through 2.1 innings, and gave up six runs on five hits.
Senior Becca Lowe, Patten and Rote recorded the only hits for the Pioneers. UWEC out hit the Pioneers 13-3.
The Pioneers will look to bounce back on Wednesday when they host UW-Oshkosh for a doubleheader at 3 p.m.
