The University of Wisconsin-Platteville softball team extended its winning streak to five games on Tuesday with a 6-3 win over Oneonta State and a 7-1 win over Wellesley in Clermont, Florida.
The Pioneers have started the season with a 5-1 record for the second best start in school history. The 1988 team started the season with seven straight wins. Junior pitcher Melissa Anderson raised her record to a perfect 3-0 in the 6-3 win over Oneonta State.
In the win against the Red Dragons, UW-Platteville was held to just two hits but took advantage of five errors by Oneonta State. The Pioneers took a 3-0 lead in the third inning with three runs on just one hit but two Red Dragons errors. In the inning, the Pioneers got a two-RBI single by Ashlen Folkers, who had both of the Pioneers hits.
With a 3-0 lead, UW-Platteville added an insurance run in each of the final three innings. Oneonta State matched the Pioneer offensive output but also stranded nine runners over the last four innings in the loss.
On the second game of the afternoon, the Pioneers jumped out to a 5-0 advantage after the third inning on Wellesley en route to the 7-1 win.
Four Pioneers had multiple hits including Folkers, Colleen Lowe, Megan Pozenzinski and Nathalie Schattner. Both Folkers and Lowe each had two RBI and scored twice to lead UW-Platteville. In the circle, Jeni Freiburger raised her record to 2-1, allowing just three hits and striking out five on the day.
UW-Platteville will wrap up its Spring Break trip to Florida with its final two games on Wednesday when they face Chicago at 10 a.m. and Ramapo at noon.
