The University of Wisconsin-Platteville softball team split a doubleheader on Monday against UW-Superior, taking game one, 10-6 and dropping the nightcap, 1-0.
UW-Platteville (15-23, 5-11 WIAC) pounded out a season-high 10 runs on another season-high 13 hits in the opener. Molly Rice led the Pioneers with three hits and Chantal McReynolds, Brittany Caley, Jordan Johnson and Cassandra Bonin each had two hits.
The Pioneers built an early 2-0 lead until the Yellow Jackets took a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the fifth. However, UW-Platteville came back to plate six runs in the sixth and two more in the seventh for a 10-3 advantage. UW-Superior scored three in the bottom of the seventh in a comeback effort.
UW-Platteville starter Melissa Anderson went nearly the distance, allowing nine hits, six runs – three earned and striking out one to improve to 10-8 on the season.
For UW-Superior, Chelsey Jarzin went 3-for-3 with two runs scored to lead a nine-hit attack. The Pioneers roughed up starter Amanda LeBard, who pitched five innings, scattering 10 hits, eight runs – six earned and striking out six in the loss.
In the sixth inning, the Pioneers got a two-run home run from Bonin, a RBI triple from Ashley Nelson, a RBI double from Rice and RBI singles by Caley and Johnson.
In game two, UW-Superior (21-13, 8-8 WIAC) scored the only run in the bottom of the first but it was just enough for the 1-0 victory.
A RBI single by Lindsay Garay drove in Chelsey Jarzin, who
singled and swiped second for the Yellow Jackets run. Garay was
also the winning pitcher for UW-Superior to raise her record to
3-1.
UW-Platteville starter Jeni Freiburger was the
tough-luck loser, allowing just three hits – two of which
came in the first inning and struck out three, falling to 5-11. The
Pioneers got two hits from Ellyn Goerdt while
Ashley Nelson and Nathalie
Schattner each had a hit as well.
